Mass in B-flat

The "Mass in Bb" was first performed in November 1915 by the choir of All Saints, Margaret Street, London. The Director of Music at the time, Dr Walter Vale, adapted movements from Rachmaninoff's "Liturgy of St John Chrysostom" to the words of the Ordinary of the Mass from the "Book of Common Prayer", in English with the exception of the "Kyrie" which uses the traditional Greek words. The adaptation was sanctioned by Rachmaninoff, who attended a performance of the "Mass" at All Saints in 1924.

Messa da Requiem [Small Ensmble ver.]

The choir director and music pedagogue Michael Betzner-Brandt from Berlin is particularly renowned in the choir scene for his creativity. In order to perform Verdi's Requiem with his chamber choir, he arranged the work as a "chamber oratorio". The piano reduction, which forms the foundation, is expanded by parts for horn, double bass, marimba and percussion. The expressive orchestral timbres of the original are not lost, but transformed into more delicate shades. The Requiem is enhanced especially in its many chamber music passages. * Enables smaller choirs to perform this attractive work, without cooperation with other ensembles and orchestras. * Performances can be realized on a smaller budget. * Offers challenging and rewarding soloistic parts for instrumentalists. * The "chamber oratorio" version offers a fresh view on the well-known work. * The piano reduction and choir score are identical to the original version.

Quattro pezzi sacri

The single works forming the sacred music cycle "Quattro pezzi sacri" were composed as independent pieces between 1889 and 1897. The scoring ranges from solo voices a cappella to double choir with large orchestra. In 1898, the year of their first joint performance, Verdi had them published together as "Quattro pezzi sacri". With the composition of the "Quattro pezzi
sacri" in the last years of his life, Verdi thus returned to his church musician origins. Already at the age of 10, Verdi performed the duties of organist in his home congregation and later in Busseto, where he received his first music lessons. The masses at the collegiate church in Busseto formed some of his most important musical impressions. During the time Verdi composed "Falstaff", his last opera, he was once again composing sacred music, this time in a conscious encounter with historical models such as Palestrina and Bach.

Te Deum

Giuseppe Verdi's Te Deum for double choir and large orchestra is the most frequently performed work of his Quattro pezzi sacri; composed in 1895/96, the Te Deum was his next to last work. Verdi came to terms intensively and in a very personal manner with the text of the Ambrosian hymn of praise. In a compact formal structure a broad range of styles unfolds, from the monodic beginning in Gregorian chant via large dramatic effects to the soft, doubtful dying away of the conclusion. The work is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series "Choir & organ".

Stabat Mater

The Stabat Mater is the last work composed by Giuseppe Verdi. He completed it in 1897 at the age of 84. One year later it was published with the somewhat earlier Te Deum as part of the Quattro pezzi sacri. Verdi set Mary's meditation in the face of her crucified son, a classic of Medieval Latin poetry, in an operatically expressive style for choir and large orchestra. Verdi's Stabat Mater is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series "Choir & organ".

Our joyful'st feast

This Christmas carol, commissioned by the Finnish broadcasting company Yle and first performed in Helsinki by Helsinki Chamber Choir, conducted by Nils Schweckendiek, is based on three texts, two by William Shakespeare and one by George Wither. The largely homophonic textures combine with Rautavaara's characteristically rich and often chromatic harmonies to form a very effective and satisfying work, a bit different from the usual Christmas offering.

John Tavener Favourite Anthems

John Tavener Favourite Anthems for SATB choir presents some of John Tavener's most popular works from his outstandingly varied and extensive catalogue of works for choir. Also included are beautiful miniatures and radiant anthems which trace a line over the years from the exquisite simplicity of his setting of William Blake's The Lamb to the monumental Veil of the Temple and beyond. John Tavener rose to fame in 1969 when his oratorio The Whale was recorded on The Beatles's Apple label. Following his conversion to the Orthodox Church in 1977, his music moved in the direction of ever greater spirituality and intensity. He scored a popular success in 1989 with the Proms premiere of The Protecting Veil, followed by the production of his opera Mary of Egypt at the Aldeburgh Festival.

The Tallis Psalter

Tallis Psalter: Psalms and Anthems, Canticles, Preces and Responses is the first complete edition of the Psalter, allowing, for the first time in centuries, a performance within the Anglican liturgy. Also in this volume are Tallis's surviving English anthems, including popular works such as If ye love me and Hear the voice and prayer, and lesser-known miniatures such as A new commandment and Purge me, O Lord, the evening Dorian Service, and Preces and Responses for five voices.

The original Psalter contains Thomas Tallis's nine tunes set to metrical verses by Archbishop Matthew Parker, and published in around 1567.Many of the tunes have since been reworked as popular hymns, while Ralph Vaughan Williams famously used the Third Tune as the basis for his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

Two Psalms

Britten composed the Psalms between July and December 1931 while he was at the Royal College of Music. He revised them shortly after, completing the revisions in January 1932. While they were never performed in the composer's lifetime, the psalms were well-regarded by both Britten (according to comments in his diaries at the time) and by others he consulted about them. He took them to composition lessons with John Ireland on at least one occasion, and also discussed them with Herbert Howells who gave him encouraging comments. In February 1932 Britten showed them to Vaughan Williams, who attempted several times to get them performed, but with no success. In May 1932 he submitted them, along with Phantasy Quintet in F minor (Jan-Feb 1932), in support of his application for the Mendelssohn Scholarship at the Royal College of Music.

The psalms are scored for full orchestra and chorus and are among the most substantial works Britten composed while at the Royal College. They are the only large-scale works for chorus and orchestra composed in this period: the next work for comparable forces is Ballad of Heroes, written in 1937.
