Everyone Sang [SATB]

Commissioned by The Co-Curricular Activities Branch of The Ministry of Education, Singapore, I composed this choral work as an assigned piece for the secondary school choral division of The Singapore Youth
Festival Central Judging 2007.

I chose the text from a poem written by Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967), an English poet who is well known for his antiwar poems born from his experience of fighting in the front line during World War I.
"Everyone Sang"depicts vividly and emotively the joy of people who were liberated when the war ended.

The song proceeds lightly and powerfully in the 6/8 rhythm, delicately reflecting the contents of the poem. The fundamental rhythm, essential to the music, was inspired by Joget, a typical Malaysian dance.

The Seeds of Stars

For upper voices, SATB, and piano or orchestra.
The Seeds of Stars is a resplendent setting of a philosophical text by Charles Bennett. The rippling piano part provides a shimmering accompaniment to radiant and expressive vocal lines, and Chilcott effectively contrasts upper- and mixed-voice sections with stirring passages for all voices. Reflecting the vivid imagery of the text, the upper voices soar above the choir during climatic moments, but also bring the piece to its gentle, profound close.

Vidi aquam

This attractive and uplifting anthem sets the text of the Eastertide Vidi aquam antiphon. Different parts of the text are treated to contrasting musical ideas, including extended melismatic upper-voice passages and mainly homophonic full-choir sections, and the undulating organ part represents the flowing water of the text. A welcome addition to a service or concert programme for all fans of Gabriel Jackson's music.
Commissioned by the Friends of Lincoln Cathedral for their 75th anniversary and first performed by the Choir of Lincoln Cathedral with Charles Harrison (organ), directed by Aric Prentice, on 25 June 2011

A Songbird

Songbird sets an evocative text describing songbirds that spin tunes of gold. The catchy, colourful melody is first presented by tutti voices, and is then woven through the vocal parts, often to scat accompaniment. The setting ends with an effective passage of close imitation.

Alice

Alice is a quirky, light-hearted celebration of the Alice books by Lewis Carroll. The singers' tale of an encounter with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, and the Hatter, is underpinned by a lively and characterful piano part. Spirited, fun, and with great potential for dramatic performance, this piece will be a memorable addition to any concert.
A version for SATB and piano is available from the composer's website.

Here on these Branches

This bewitching setting tells the story of a young girl walking in an enchanted forest, mesmerized by dreamy, ancient songs sung by a chorus of birds. An atmospheric ostinato played on finger cymbals and claves accompanies the voices, and Quartel sets a strong melodic line against the warm harmonies of the birdsong.

I remember

I remember sets a text reflecting on the wonder of the natural world and the people who shape our lives. The stirring melody calls to mind the folksong tradition, and is underpinned by a gently flowing piano accompaniment. The middle section brings a contrast of tonality, with the altos accompanying the sopranos' melodic line, before the beguiling melody of the opening returns to bring the setting to a poignant close.

Missa Carolae

It is the oldest cathedral in England. Performances there begin with a ceremonial procession that
follows the movement of a boy chorister, accompanied by pipe and drum, from the High Altar
to a large crib placed in the Nave, gathering the choirs (singing from different parts of the
cathedral) and principal clergy in the course of the procession.
The work, though not literally for dancing, is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit, which
is true to the origin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well
known, so that the singers can sing with the whole of their bodies and not just their voices.
It is suitable for liturgical or concert use.

Dum medium silentium

Miskinis creates a hypnotic atmosphere, with the juxtaposition of repetitive rhythmic fragments and sustained lines against the pulse, broken occasionally by a homophonic outburst. This rather lyrical minimalism proves very effective for this setting of the Introit for Sunday within the Octave of Christmas.
