Ave Regina coelorum

There are two choirs in this piece: The large choir is supplemented by a small chamber choir. Invocations are piled up into chords within which strong accents and crescendi ensure vitality and transormation. In the second half Schanderl begins to disrupt the ideal of a homogeneous, cultivated and polished sound. He asks of the chamber choir an abrupt alternation of chest and head voice, a type of yodel also found in African music.

*Hans Schanderl
Hans Schanderl (b.1960) has achieved his successes with choirs. The skill and appeal of his music has it roots in the composer's unconventional biography and his readiness to explore many influences with open-minden curiosity. He aims to display the variety that vocal expression is capable of achieving, to cimbine the separate areas of speech, song and cries and to to explore these to their limits.

Lux Aeterna I

This piece uses an instrumental element in the form of an organ. The choir must first emancipate itself from it. At the beginning the organ part contains elements, which the performer can employ at his discretion and the take up. This may describe the light shinning eternally and withour form. Schanderl develops the piece from only few Notes. The minimalistic and layered voices mount and intensify in sound until the end of the piece. With this work the composer won the composition prize at 2001 European Church Music Festival.

Te Deum

Schanderl shorted the text and gave a subtitle "The Creation pays homage to God", which is nothing majestic about this piece. The sound-layer, the accentuations and the dispersing of the voices are recognizable as patented sytlistic devices This song of priase is written for three choirs which ideally should ne divied spatially around the audience.

Ave Maria

It is a simple lyrical choral piece that was written in memory of the composer's mother. In the beginning, the repeat of "Ave Maria" in alto and tenor parts keeps the music moving forward. St John Passion

Chilcott's mighty setting of words from the Gospel of St John is a dramatic yet optimistic retelling of the Passiontide story. As with Bach's great Passion settings, the role of the Evangelist is taken by the tenor soloist, who provides a melodious narrative throughout the work, in arioso style. The words of Jesus and Pilate are performed by solo baritones. Within the narrative, the SATB chorus becomes a crowd or a group of soldiers, commenting on the story in short outbursts, although the larger role of the choir is to perform the four meditations and five hymns that support the story. For the meditations-two of which include soprano solos-Chilcott has selected English poems from the 13th to the early 17th centuries. The five well-known hymn texts are set to new, original melodies, which are also intended for performance by an audience or congregation.

Five Days that Changed the World

Setting a newly written text by Charles Bennett, this fifteen-minute choral work takes singers on a journey through five historical events: the invention of printing, the abolition of slavery, the first powered flight, the discovery of penicillin, and the first man in space. In each movement, music and words come together to create a strikingly vivid and personal account of each protagonist's experience, from the printer seeing 'each letter like a person' to the astronaut commenting on the beauty of our planet from space. Chilcott's music is as captivating as ever, with energy in abundance alongside moments of clarity and stillness. This is an ideal concert work for choirs looking to perform with an upper-voice group, or for larger SATB choruses with divisi sopranos and altos.
The optional timpani part is printed separately at the back of the score.

What Sweeter Music

What sweeter music is an atmospheric setting of Robert Herrick's popular Christmas text. The carol opens with hushed, interweaving choral lines, creating a soft veil of sound that expands texturally and dynamically into an expressive central section. The sustained melodic interest in every part combines to create a gorgeous work that choirs will find a true pleasure to sing. What sweeter music will be included on a forthcoming CD by Commotio.

The King Shall Rejoice

The King shall rejoice was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's coronation. Setting powerful and optimistic words from Psalm 21, Chilcott establishes a celebratory mood from the outset, with dancing 6/8 rhythms and jubilant, ringing chords. The voices soon divide into two choirs, creating a striking antiphonal effect, and the music moves through sections of slower, more sustained writing in 4/4. The second half of the work sets an adapted version of the psalm text, famously used by William Byrd-'O Lord, make thy servant Elizabeth our Queen rejoice in thy strength'-before coming to a buoyant and triumphant close with the final 'amen'.
